Italian Carnival has very ancient roots and today has become a folkloristic holiday in which traditions and fun work together to amaze people with this unique celebration.
During Italian Carnival you can be whatever or whoever you want! Masks allow people to to transform themselves, at least for a few days.
The actual term “Carnevale” derives from the Latin “carnem levare” for “take away the meat”: indeed, in Antiquity the term indicated the banquet held the last day before the period of abstinence from meat before Easter
Italy has many Carnevale Festivals, but Venice, Viareggio, and Cento hold the biggest and most elaborate celebration. Many other Italian towns hold carnival festivals, some with very unusual events.
Venice’s main Carnevale events are settled in Piazza San Marco, but there are various events in every sestiere. You can enjoy gondola and boat parades along the Grand Canal, a mask parade in Piazza San Marco and a special Carnevale for Children event in the Cannaregio district. At the end a fireworks show in Piazza San Marco can be seen all over Venice and underline the climax of Carnevale.
