The Italian expression is : Perdere il filo del discorso

In English can be translated with: To loose my train of thought

The expression is about to get distracted or disoriented.

It means the interruption of a thought and so the interruption of  a speech.

Sometimes you get distracted while you’re talking to a friend, or may happen to be interrupted by a person and at that point you can’t  remember what you were saying.

But,   “Perdere il filo del discorso” , originally, was much more material.

Many language historians agree: the allusion is to the Greek mythology, the famous Ariadne’s thread. The one that allowed Theseus to cross the labyrinth of the Minotaur in Crete, and to kill the monster.

Examples of phrases:

-You distracted me and I lost my train of thought

-I’m sorry I was a little concentrated, can you  repeat what you said? I lost my train of thought

-When the teacher explains, you have to pay attention! Otherwise you get lost and you’re flunked!

ITA
