 I’ll teach you how to use Italian Auxiliary verbs – I verbi servili!

DOVERE, POTERE, VOLERE sono verbi servili e vogliono l’infinito : Dovere + infinito, Potere + infinito, Volere + infinito

DOVERE, POTERE, VOLERE are auxiliary verbs and must be followed by the infinitive : Dovere + infinitive, Potere + infinitive, Volere + infinitive

Examples: 

Io devo andare – I have to go

Tu puoi dire – You can say

Noi vogliamo fare – We want to do

 

Simple present of the verb Dovere

Io devo

Tu devi

Egli deve

Noi dobbiamo

Voi dovete 

Essi devono

Simple present of the verb Volere

Io voglio

Tu vuoi

Egli vuole

Noi vogliamo

Voi volete

Essi vogliono

Simple present of the verb Potere

Io posso 

Tu puoi

Egli può

Noi possiamo

Voi potete

Essi possono

Volere can also be followed by a noun

Volere + noun

Io voglio una casa nuova

Tu vuoi il computer

Negative form

Io non devo andare – I don’t have to go

Tu non puoi dire – You can’t talk

Noi non vogliamo parlare – We don’t want to talk

Also other verbs could be auxiliary verbs, followed by the infinitive

Preferire – To prefer

Sapere – To know

Desiderare – To wish
